A Getaway Trip To The Small Cattle Co. Ranch
By Paul Speer
As it turned out there were several cancellations for that week at the ranch due to the air travel fears so I showed up with only one other person. I was a little disappointed at first but soon found that I was selfishly enjoying the more individual time I was getting to spend with Butch and his staff. If its a Real Cowboy experience you are looking for you would be hard pressed to find a more genuine, down to earth Cowboy to show you the ropes than Butch. A true veteran and champion of the Rodeo circuit he has the experience to teach you horsemanship and is happy to share his many Cowboy stories and life philosophies as you ride along doing the days chores.
Just what the Doctor ordered were my thoughts as I rode the range Butch Small calls home. Where the Deer and the Antelope really do play, and the cattle are calling as we headed them up and moved them out.
For weeks I had been glued to the Television watching the news and the horror of the Sept. 11th terrorist attack and was experiencing a much higher level of stress and anxiety than what was usually provided by my high stress occupation when the time came to pack up for my trip. For some reason I was not as excited about going as I had been prior to the attacks but I knew I really needed a break so I headed from my California home to the wilds of Northern Idaho.
I enjoyed myself tremendously and had a very hard time leaving at the end of my week. I felt I had made knew friends with the Small family and Susan the cook and was missing them already. There was not a phone or TV to be found at the cow camp nor pools or spas but you know, I would not have had it any other way. However there were the Cattle, Moose, Elk, Deer, Antelope, A Big Badger and wide open spaces as far as the eye could see and this is just exactly what the Doctor would have ordered if I had gone to one smart enough to know the healing value a trip like this would have to offer. Would I recommend this trip to others?? In A word... Yep!
